Quora is a site where people go to read insightful, in-depth answers and stories—and one in particular is blowing people away right now. Kevin Walsh found the question, “What is one moment in your life you thought could only happen in a movie” and started with a simple, “I can’t not answer this” before launching into the most intense love story we’ve ever read.
“Once upon a time I was 13 at a summer camp and the prettiest girl I’d ever seen walked right up to me and said ‘black is a good color on you.’ No idea why,” he wrote. “We chatted and became friends, exchanged AIM screen names (it was the time) and stayed in touch for a while.” But even though they lost touch during high school, he says he still thought about that girl every day. “Even now I’m not sure I can say why—something about her just stayed with me.”
Kevin says that during his senior year he went through “some dumb high school stuff that seemed earth-shattering at the time,” and he fell into depression. “I resolved to take my own life, wrote a note and went to where I planned to end things,” he said. But just a few seconds before he intended to commit suicide, his phone rang. “I checked the caller ID—I couldn’t die not knowing,” he says. “It was a number I didn’t recognize, so I picked up and it was her.”
And this is the part that will seriously give you goose bumps. “I asked her what was up and she said she just felt like she had to call me,” he writes. “At that point it had been a year since we had spoken, and at that moment she just had to call.” Kevin says the girl “pried, I spilled the beans, and she talked me out of it.”
“I mean she literally said ‘What? Don’t do that.’ And that was that,” he says. “She made me promise to call her the next day, and we hung up. That night I started writing the words, which, 10 years later, I’d propose with.”
Kevin included two photos with his story—one of him and the girl from camp and another from them on their wedding day. The story has been viewed 314,000 times, and Kevin said in a later edit that he and his wife are “humbled and honored” by the response to their story.
On his wife Blake’s Instagram (where she’s chronicled the couple’s love story with many adorable pics, btw), she was similarly gracious: “We are blown away by the tremendous response we’ve gotten.” She also posted a screenshot of her husband’s Quora response, along with the sweet caption: “SO filled with admiration and affection for this awesome man.”
