If you are a sexually active man, not in a monogamous relationship with a partner, you should be using condoms every time you have sex. If you are a sexually active woman, not in a monogamous relationship with a partner, you should make sure your Mr. Right Now (provided he’s a man) wears a condom every time. Doing so will radically reduce the already stunningly high transmission rate of sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. And now, some brilliant students have formulated a way to more easily find out if you have an STI.
The “Smart Condom”, otherwise called the S.T.EYE, alerts you if your partner is infected with an STI. It does so by changing colors when in contact with STI viruses and bacteria. For example, if exposed to HPV, they turn purple. If exposed to syphilis, blue. If it encounters herpes, it turns yellow, and green for chlamydia.
The condoms were invented by 3 primary school students in the United Kingdom, ages 13 and 14.
“We wanted to make something that make detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors,” 14-year-old Ali said. “We’ve made sure we’re able to give peace of mind to users and make sure people can be even more responsible than ever before.”
