High up on the rocky facade of Mount Song in China, something incredible is happening. Home to the Shaolin Temple, the “Central Great Mountain” is culturally significant to the Chinese people, Buddhists in particular.
And there, the Shaolin monks practice their kung fu — only they do it on a cliff overlooking a 4,921 foot drop.
Perched cautiously over the edge (sometimes even on the rails), these monks defy gravity for their practice. The photos are nerve-wracking, but will almost certainly take your breath away.
At its peak, Mount Song is about 1,512 meters high.
The kung fu practiced on the cliff of the mountain is part of these Shaolin monks’ training.
The spots that they practice are harrowing, and sometimes offer little to no protection from the drop.
Here’s hoping that while they are learning kung fu, these monks are also teaching themselves to never, ever look down.
