As easy as it is to play in the snow and get sneezing, it is just as difficult to get rid of it. Your throat cries for help, head is a pounding mess and your nose is the reindeer you never had. Not to mention it drives you friends crazy and you’re suddenly the outcast, thanks to the nose that never stops running.
As easy as it may sound to just gulp down cough syrup and make it okay, you may just be making your cough worse. As Christmas rolls in, we’ll try anything to make those pesky germs go away, buying whatever we can get our hands on in the local pharmacy, just so we can be okay for the festivities.
But there’s one medicine the NHS warns against using when you’ve got a cold: cough medicine, reports Mirror. YES.
They’ve got a very good reason too. Apparently, there isn’t evidence that cough medicine actually works! — and it could actually leave you feeling ill for longer as it keeps the dirty stuff in your lungs. Ew.
Advice on the NHS website page for chest infections reads: “Avoid cough medicines, as there’s little evidence they work, and coughing actually helps you clear the infection more quickly by getting rid of the phlegm from your lungs.”
So how do you take caare of your chest infections? NHS website has some tips for you that are better.
But first, maybe we should really stop messing with mother nature, huh?
Anyway, first come the symptoms and they can be the following:
1. A persistent cough that doesn’t go away with hot tea or on its own. A cough that keeps on giving? Yep, it could be an infection.
2. Coughing up yellow or green phlegm (thick mucus), or coughing up blood.
Don’t panic. Check it properly and then go see a doc. You may need to get that stuff cleaned out.
3. Breathlessness or rapid and shallow breathing or wheezing
Please Please avoid taking over the counter drugs. Just go see someone who knows their medical degree.
4. If you’re running a fever and have rapid heartbeat
5. Chest pain or tightness or feeling confused and disorientated
Now that you know you may have a chest infection, here is what you can do about it to ease your troubles. None of this involves any cough syrup.
1. Get plenty of rest
Lots and lots of it. Make up for all the sleep that you haven’t in the entire year. The infection will only get worse if you’re strained and weak, you need your strength to fight!
2. Drink fluids. If you dehydrate, you lose.
Drinking lots of fluid to prevent dehydration and to loosen the mucus in your lungs is one one of the key ways to get better. Hot fluids, like soup, broth, green tea or just plain hot water, makes the phlegm loosen up, making it easier o cough out. Phlegm out, cough bye bye!
3. Treating headaches, fever and aches and pains with painkillers instead of cough syrup
Go for paracetamol or ibuprofen, they will take care of that annoying headache.
4. Honey and lemon
If your throat feels like the Sahara, add some honey and lemon to a warm drink—water or tea—to relieve a sore throat caused by persistent coughing. You should at least be able to sleep through the night.
5. Using some extra pillows
Raising your head up with extra pillows while you’re sleeping – to make breathing easier.
