Despite almost 55 years passing since the 36-year-old actress was found dead at her Los Angeles home, mystery still surrounds the cause of her death.
Whilst a 1962 inquest ruled Marilyn had overdosed in a probable suicide, there are many who still believe the Hollywood star was murdered in an elaborate cover-up.
A new UFO documentary, Unacknowledged, is the latest to put forward such a conspiracy theory – suggesting the star was killed by the US government after threatening to reveal top-secret information on extraterrestrials.
The film follows ufologist Dr Steven Greer, as he explores what he claims is a well-documented history of the United States hiding evidence of alien life.
Directed by Michael Mazzola, “Unacknowledged” goes into a wide range of conspiracy theories, including one that offers up a possible explanation for Marilyn Monroe’s death — that she knew about UFOs and threatened to leak classified documents.
In a clip first spotted by technology website Gizmodo, actor Burl Ives claimed that Monroe did not die from a drug overdose. Dr. Steven Greer, who is the subject of the documentary holds up a so-called death warrant after Monroe had had phone coversations with reporter Dorothy Kilgallen, who was looking into the famous Roswell incident.
Dr Greer, who founded the Centre for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, claims Marilyn had been having affairs with both President Kennedy and his younger brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy.
Reading from a transcript of a phone call between a Dorothy Kilgallen, a journalist investigating UFOs, and her close friend; Dr Greer claims Kilgallen talks of wiretapped calls between Marilyn and Robert Kennedy.
Below is the clip in its entirety:
“The best evidence for extraterrestrial contact, dating back decades, is presented with direct top-secret witness testimony, documents and UFO footage, 80% of which has never been revealed anywhere else,” the plot summary reads. “The behind-the-scenes research and high-level meetings convened by Dr. Steven Greer will expose the degree of illegal, covert operations at the core of UFO secrecy.”
According to the transcript, which Greer brands “a death warrant”, when both brothers called time on their relationships with the actress, she wanted revenge and “threatened to hold a press conference” as she “had secrets to tell”.
Greer explains: “One such secret mentions the visit of the President at a secret air base, with the purpose of inspecting things from outer space.
According to a journalist who allegedly bugged Marilyn’s calls, she had ‘secrets to tell’ concerning President Kennedy’s visit to a ‘secret air base’
“The subject [Marilyn] repeatedly called the Attorney General and complained about the way she was being ignored by the Pres and his brother.
“The subject threatened to hold a press conference, and would tell all.”
He adds: “It’s a tragic situation because she was an actress, she didn’t understand the national security state and the viciousness of those who want to keep these kind of secrets.”
