A little girl in Gujarat, Western India, received news that would frighten most adults when doctors found a whole colony of ants living inside her head.
According to The Times of India, 12-year-old Shreya Darji first complained of ear pain last August. When her family took her to see an ear, nose and throat specialist, they made the horrifying discovery that her ear wasn’t infected, it was simply full of giant ants.
Shreya first began to complain about pains in her ears, and was taken to see ear, nose and throat specialist Dr Jawahar Talsania who discovered the colony of creepy crawlies living in her head, “ but has yet to find out why, let alone how to get rid of them.
Although doctors report attempts to try and suffocate the ants with drops of liquid antiseptic, the ants keep reproducing. In addition, they have had no luck trying to find and kill an egg-laying queen ant with laparoscopic cameras. The girl has even been taken to see witch doctors. However, nothing seems to help.
Dr Jawahar Talsania, a city-based ENT doctor, said that he has never found such a case during his practice of 32 years. “The girl’s case is very challenging for me, as I have never seen such a case, nor found it in medical history. The big ants must be biting her, but the girl did not event feel pain inside her ears. Besides, there was no damage inside her ear,” said Talsania.
He said tests run on the 12-year-old, such as MRI and CT scans hadnot revealed any abnormalities, and that her ears appeared to be healthy otherwise.
The girl`s living conditions at her home in the district of Banskantha were also ruled out as a cause.
“The family live a normal life and they have a healthy environment so we can’t even blame their living conditions,” Dr Talsania told the Mail Online.
“We don’t believe the ants are laying eggs inside the ear as we`ve not spotted a queen ant inside. We are completely perplexed.”
There are now plans to keep Shreya under video observation so the mystery can be solved.
