So we’ve all heard the touching pay it forward stories where someone pays for the next car in the drive-thru, but this pay-it-forward chain just took the cake (or the Happy Meal) at a Florida McDonald’s.
Cashier Marisabel Figueroa Lopez says she was working the window last week when a woman came drove in and told her she would like to pay the bill for the car behind her.
The customer just had one condition—that she would tell those in the car “Merry Christmas,” not “Happy Holidays, Lopez told Fox 13.
But to Lopez’s surprise, the giving spirit of Christmas did not end there. It turns out, that one customer ignited a chain reaction of 250 people in a row paying for the next car! After the 15th customer came through, she started taking a tally to see just how far it would go.
When the 251st car pulled up, she seemed a little confused by what was going on, according to the cashier. “She was speechless,” Lopez told Bay News 9. “She said, ‘What do I do?’ And I said, ‘You just have a Merry Christmas,’ and she went off, and it stopped right there.”
Regardless, the McDonald’s worker was astounded by the length of the chain and is hopeful that it will inspire others around the nation to do the same.
“It’s the spirit of giving. She felt like she could start something. And she did,” said Lopez. “I want to tell that person out there, ‘Thank you.’”
And apparently this isn’t the first time America has seen such a pay-it-forward chain reaction in a drive-thru. A whopping 378 people reportedly did the same thing at a Starbucks in St. Petersburg, FL last year.
Whether it be through a burger, a latte, or a kind smile, never underestimate the giving power of a simple “Merry Christmas.”
